5 Big Reasons Why Mainstream Skin Care Lines Are Bad For Your Skin

Let’s face it. Big brand skin care lines aren’t all they are cracked up to be. In spite of the high prices, glossy advertisements, and super model spokespeople, big brand skin care products are of low quality and their effectiveness is questionable.

Here are 5 big reasons why you should avoid mainstream skin care products altogether.

1. Big brand companies may offer you skin care samples to lure you in. Surely you’ve experienced sticker shock just by looking at the prices. Despite popular belief, just because skin care products are expensive doesn’t mean they are good. If you buy low-profile products from companies that prioritize high quality and effectiveness over advertising and marketing, it can be surprisingly affordable. Big brand products are expensive because they spend so much on advertising and marketing their products.

2. Mainstream skin care lines are seldom natural and safe. They contain a vast number of synthetic chemical ingredients that have been linked with health problems and skin irritation. For example, parabens are commonly found in mainstream skin care products as preservatives but they have been linked with breast cancer.

3. In pursuit of skin care samples and freebies, you may be tempted to shop at big department stores but if you want to find skin care products that really work, shop online. Companies that sell primarily online build customer loyalty because their products are good, not because they hand out freebies.

4. Skin care lines sold at mainstream outlets do not contain a high concentration of active ingredients. Often they only contain traces of active ingredients so their effectiveness is limited. Instead, look for products that are made up at least 50% by active ingredients for the best results.

5. Stop using skin care samples! You need to give your entire skin care regime a boost by using only all natural products. Mainstream products contain harsh chemical ingredients that cause skin problems and premature aging. A lot of labels use the words “natural” and “organic” but they are false claims. Only buy products from companies that have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. I can assure you that most big brand companies have not signed this agreement.

Your goal? Take this information and shop around for skin care lines that are safe, natural, and effective.

As you can see, there are many reasons why you shouldn’t use mainstream skin care products. They are laden with chemicals and their effectiveness is limited. If you want to get the most bang for your buck, shop online with companies that pledge to make safe and natural products. If you do so your skin will look and feel better from the inside out.

Choosing Organic Skincare For Mom and Baby

Turn over the back of a shampoo, lotion, or body wash bottle. Is the ingredient listing recognizable and easy to pronounce? If not, it is time to consider a switch to natural and organic skincare. Much attention is placed these days on the chemicals that go into our foods, so isn’t it important to understand the chemicals going on our skin? Our skin is the largest organ of the human body, so taking care of it is essential.

Why choose organic skincare? Certified organic skincare will be free from pesticide residues, genetically modified ingredients (GMO’s), hormones and antibiotics. Currently, personal care products are not defined under organic law. However, the ingredients used in organic skincare can fall under the same standards set for organic food. When researching natural and organic skincare lines, check to make sure the ingredients are free of parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, pesticides, SLS’s, artificial colorings and fragrances. Look for product lines made from 75 – 99% certified organic ingredients or the USDA certified seal which means 95% of the ingredients are organic. One of the most important factors in determining which skincare product to buy is reading labels.

Why is organic skincare important for our babies? A baby’s skin can be up to five times thinner than adults, which makes it more prone to skin irritations. Natural ingredients in baby lotions and oils will also allow allergy prone babies to have soft, supple skin. Organic baby skincare includes baby lotions, baby creams, baby oils, shampoos, body washes, diaper cream, and sunscreen. You will find these products made with jojoba oil, aloe, mango & shea butter, organic lavender, chamomile, and organic coconut oil. Many of the products have multi-use purposes. Organic Baby oil is great for baby massages, irritated skin, and cradle cap. A good diaper cream will not only serve baby, but can be used as an anti-chafing cream on adults.

Mom-to-be should be pampered too. If you are not putting harsh chemicals on your baby’s skin, why do so to yourself? Organic and natural skincare lines for mom include stretch mark creams, oils, body lotions, nursing balms, and body washes. As more companies manufacture natural and organic product, it is easy to find in drugstores, mass market chains, health food stores, and of course, online. You may find natural and organic products may be more expensive than other labels, but in the long run it is worth knowing only natural and pure ingredients are used. It is good for the environment and may help to reduce the number of trips to a doctor.

Acne Skin Care – 6 Tips To Make It Easier

A significant number of people of all ages suffer from skin problems such as rashes, blemishes, blackheads and acne. Commonly developing during puberty, acne usually occurs during a time of life when the individual is the most vulnerable and socially insecure. This makes acne not only a physical condition but sometimes an emotional and/or psychological one. Acne can shatter an individual?s confidence. Acne breakouts are the result of excessive secretions of oil from glands under the skin, leading to a buildup that blocks the ducts leading to the skin’s surface. Acne primarily affects the face, chest, back and upper arms. Some people continue to suffer from acne related skin infections for many years past their adolescence, although it usually diminishes during early adulthood. There is no definite way to determine when acne breakouts will stop.

Acne is frustrating for many people because it is unpredictable and sometimes seems out-of-control. Breakouts have been attributed to several factors, including diet, heredity and genetics, vitamin deficiencies and stress. Since the exact causes acne are still unknown and there isn’t any measure available to prevent it. The best defense is a good acne skin care regimen which ameliorates and controls acne breakouts. For more severe types of acne, such as cystic acne, a dermatologist should be consulted since medical treatments are advisable to prevent or lessen scarring, but for milder forms of acne there are many options available.

Six General Tips For Living With Acne:

1. Washing twice a day, using mild cleansers and gentle movements is the best acne skin care regimen. Gentle cleansing removes excess oils, dirt, and pollutants which contribute to the development of blemishes. Strong detergents, harsh scrubbing, and harsh facial scrubbers irritate the skin and may contribute to inflammation and breakouts. Also, its best to avoid opening the blemishes since it may spread the infection over the skin. Squeezing pimples may also cause them to burst under the skin infecting other skin pores as a result, dermatologists strongly advise against doing this. Shampooing regularly also helps to prevent acne by keeping the natural oils from hair off of the skin surface.

2. Astringents may be helpful for very oily skin but should be avoided for other skin types. Choose astringents and other topical applications carefully, if they are too strong it may cause more oil production and irritation.

3. For men, shaving should be done carefully in order to avoid irritating or spreading acne. Choose a safety razor that is right for you by testing out a few. Soften beards by first washing the face and neck with mild soap and warm water; then apply a shaving cream. Use care in selecting the shaving cream because many contain ingredients such as menthol that may irritate your acne. Use a sharp razor and shave lightly to avoid cuts and rupturing blemishes.

4. Exposing your skin for a while to the sun may help to erase blemishes at the skin surface. The natural vitamin D in sunlight has been shown to improve skin quality. Nevertheless, care should be taken to avoid excess sun exposure which leads to premature aging, dryness and sunburn, and the development of skin cancer. Some prescription medications also cause photo-sensitivity. Discuss with your physician whether mild sun exposure may help with your individual case.

5. Individuals with acne should use oil free cosmetic products. Many cosmetics contain fatty acids that may be harmful to acne prone individuals. Select good quality cosmetics but be aware that some “oil free” products may be drying to the skin. Look for organic or acne-related skin care products to lessen the impact of cosmetics upon acne. Keep in mind that topical applications for acne treatment, such as some Benzoyl peroxide products, may react with the facial cosmetics.

6. It is best to consult a dermatologist before applying any acne skin care product. Particularly for serious cases of acne infection, treatment by a dermatologist is advisable to keep acne under control and to prevent breakouts. Observing proper acne skin care is important especially for younger individuals. Blemishes and rashes tend to heal faster when a person is younger but severe acne cases should be properly taken care of to prevent scarring. A healthy diet and lifestyle will also lessen the effects of acne.

Powerfully Healing EFAs in Organic Evening Primrose Oil

Essential Oil of Organic Evening Primrose is known for many scientifically-proven healing properties for all kinds of health complaints, ranging from PMS to HDAD in children, and even rheumatoid arthritis. This organic essential oil is an incredibly healing plant that contains an Omega-6 essential fatty acid known as Gamma-linolenic Acid (GLA), that has actually been licensed in several countries for the effective treatment of common skin disorders. It is also popular in anti-aging skincare products for treatment of dark circles under the eyes, wrinkles and age spots, and is highly effective in decreasing acne skin blemishes and inflammation due to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

How to Use: Simply apply pure, Organic Evening Primrose Oil directly to the affected areas on the skin and /or nails, after mixing a few drops of the oil with another carrier oil, like organic sweet almond oil or organic extra virgin coconut oil. Significant improvement in the symptoms of many skin disorders will result with regular, daily use. For example, in eczema sufferers the oil reduces itching, dryness and peeling of the skin after 3 or 4 months of regular use. Organic Evening Primrose essential Oil is a lovely, natural, organic alternative treatment to using steroid creams and topical immuno-modulators, containing chemicals which can cause further damage and distress to the skin.

Treatment of Eczema: In 1982, a prestigious medical journal reported the results of a double-blind crossover study in which 99 patients diagnosed with ectopic eczema, a sore, dry and always itchy rash on the skin, were given high doses of Organic Evening Primrose Oil, and 43% of them reported significant improvement in their symptoms! A different Scottish study demonstrated that this essential oil is also beneficial to nails that have become dry and brittle.

Treatment of Psoriasis: Pure essential oil of Evening Primrose is anti-inflammatory in nature and also increases circulation. Further studies have shown that it reduces burning and itching when subjects regularly applied the oil to psoriasis lesions.

PMS Reduction: Organic Evening Primrose Oil is known to have an amazing effect on PMS symptoms. In 1981 a study was done at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, in which 65 women experiencing PMS were treated using the essential oil; 61% of the women experienced complete relief of symptoms and 23% reported partial relief.

Treatment of Acne: Topical application of the pure oil of Evening Primrose greatly decreases blackheads, pimples and inflammation caused by acne! This is because the oil lowers the amount of sebum in the pores of the skin, which prevents pores clogging and the inflammatory symptoms of acne. This is largely possible due to the significant anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities also inherent in this essential oil, bonus healing properties!

5 Questions Moms Should Ask When Choosing Skin Care Products

Did you know that cancer-causing chemicals have been found in the skin care products you buy for yourself and your children? Maybe you’ve heard about it in the news. But if you didn’t, you’re not alone. Many people, just like you, have been using body care products containing harmful ingredients without even knowing it. There are no laws to make sure the ingredients in the products you buy are safe. You see, the skin care industry is unregulated. Except for color additives and a few ingredients which are banned, manufacturers can use any ingredients they want in the skin care products they make … without approval from the FDA or any other government agency.

Why is this important to you?

Cancer has been the second leading cause of death in the U. S. for many years … and it still is. Even children are getting cancer. It’s the leading cause of death in children under 15.

There are cancer-causing chemicals everywhere these days. Many of them we have no control over, for example, in the air we breathe. But some we do, like in the products we use on our bodies – soaps, shampoos, lotions, toothpaste, sunscreen – anything we use for personal care.

The products you use for personal hygiene should help you stay healthy, not make you sick. It’s essential for you to be able to determine the safety of the products you use for yourself and your family … before you buy.

Here are five important questions you should ask before you purchase any skin care or body care product:

1. Can I believe what it says on the label?
Manufacturers spend millions of dollars designing the packaging of the products they make to entice you to buy their goods. They use words like organic and natural on the front of the package when, in reality, the product inside is far from organic or natural. They can get away with this because organic and natural are officially undefined in the cosmetics and personal care industry.

2. Does this product contain any cancer-causing ingredients?
Cancer-causing chemicals have been found in almost all types of skin care and body care products, even those sold in health food stores. A recent study found the cancer-causing contaminant 1,4-dioxane in body care products on the shelves of health food stores as well as regular grocery and drug stores. It was even in baby products.

3. Are there any other harmful ingredients in the product?
Cancer-causing chemicals aren’t the only harmful substances found in your skin care and body care products. Even if the products you choose don’t contain carcinogenic ingredients, you still need to make sure they don’t include chemicals that disrupt your hormones, are toxic to your nervous system or immune system, or have not been tested for safety.

4. Is the manufacturer committed to producing safe and healthy products?
With more and more people choosing to buy organic products because of concerns about ingredient safety, companies that typically have not produced organic products are jumping onto the bandwagon to get their piece of the organic pie. Many of these companies are not really concerned about producing safe and healthy products. Sadly, their biggest concern is making sure they get a share of the profits from the organic trend.

5. Will the ingredients in this product harm the environment?
So many of the chemicals in use today, including those in body care products, have had a harmful effect on our ecosystem. Rivers and streams are contaminated. The ecological balance of the oceans has changed. Some plant and animal species are becoming extinct. Many of the chemicals used in our modern society have had a damaging effect on our world.

What can you do to protect yourself and your family, now and in the future?

Forget about the pretty packages…

…and what the manufacturer says about the product inside. That doesn’t tell you anything about the safety of the item.

Read the ingredients list.

Find out if there are any cancer-causing chemicals or other harmful ingredients in the product. Learning how to identify the harmful ingredients is not hard. The book, Dying To Look Good, rates ingredients in your cosmetics and personal care products according to safety. You can take it with you when you shop and check the labels right in the store before you buy.

Know the manufacturer of the products you want to use.

Make sure they’re committed to the safety of their products and preserving the environment, not in it just for the profits. There are a number of companies producing certified organic products now who only started with the growing popularity of the organic movement. Many of these companies banded together to create an organic standard that allows chemicals that should never be in organic products. And they continue to push for lower organic standards that allow synthetic chemicals and pesticides.

Reading ingredients and trying to figure out if the manufacturer really is committed to the health and safety of their products may sound like a lot of work. It can be … if checking all your products for safe ingredients before you buy doesn’t interest you.

There is an easier way.

If you want to be able to select the safest and healthiest products from the most reputable companies with the highest quality ingredients, without all the effort that goes into reading labels, researching products and companies, Dying To Look Good “Best Brands” will help you do just that. You’ll receive lists of products that have been pre-screened and are guaranteed to be safe and healthy with only the best quality ingredients from manufacturers committed to your health and safety.

There is no need to wonder if the skin care products you use for your family contain cancer-causing chemicals or other harmful ingredients any more. All the research has been done for you. All you have to do is pick and choose. Now what could be simpler than that?

Regular Vs Organic Face Cream

Using an organic face cream seemed silly to me. I had used the same type of cream for years and my skin seemed fine. A friend recommended I try some of hers just as a test, so I used it on the right side of my face for a month, and used my regular, non-organic cream on the left side. I wanted to prove to her that there was no difference, and that my face cream was the same and the whole organic thing was over-rated.

I was wrong! This organic face cream she had me use beat mine hands down. The right side of my face looked younger, with many of the fine lines and wrinkles disappearing completely.

Curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to find out what the difference was between the two creams, and discovered that my old one had a lot of petroleum based by-products in them. These by-products made it seem like my skin was smoother because it literally smoothed over the top of the skin, whereas the organic face cream actually contained healthy ingredients that helped my skin from the inside out, so to speak.

Some of these ingredients were CynergyTK, Phytessence Wakame and CO -Q10. These all actually build collagen back up in our faces and can penetrate the skin up to 7 layers deep. By helping my skin re-build collagen, it makes it more elastic and fuller. My lines and crow’s feet disappeared! The best place to find these products are online at a specialty site that sells only natural skin care products.

Organic face cream is the winner hands down! I tossed all of my old creams in the garbage! I made sure to get the left side of my face to catch up with the more youthful right side in a hurry!

Do You Really Need to Use An Organic Face Wash?

Is it just me or does there seem to be a growing emphasis on using organic skincare products? Do we really need these products, or is this a just ploy by cosmetic companies to get us to give them more money? Well, since clean skin is the foundation of a good complexion, I decided to answer these questions by looking into organic face wash. Allow me to tell you what I learned through my investigation.

You see, the scientists who are developing organic skin care say a healthy, beautiful complexion can be achieved by supporting the underlying cell structure. When skin cells are kept functioning at healthy levels, they manufacture lots of structural proteins and fatty acids which keep the skin firm, smooth, moist and even-toned.

This healthy approach to skincare also pertains to an organic face wash. Instead of using harsh, chemical-based cleansers which strip out natural oils from the skin and deposit irritating chemicals on the skin, safe, organic substances like, Kaolin and bentone gel, gently pull dirt and grime from the face, with a mild disinfecting and drying effect. Your face is gently cleansed, blemishes are healed and new blemishes are prevented from forming.

But the benefits of an organic face wash don’t end there. In order to promote the health of the underlying cellular structure, scientists have added plant-based oils and emollients, enzymes, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, which nourish and stimulate healthy cell function. Substances like macadamia nut oil, shea butter, natural vitamin E and functional keratin give your cells the stimulating support they need to keep their production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid running in high gear.

You’ll never get this kind of skin-supporting cleansing from a chemical-based face wash. The artificial ingredients used in these products have nothing in common with your “organic” skin. As such, They can’t penetrate the skin, or deliver cell-supporting nutrients. Oh, your skin will be clean, but will also be overly-dry and left exposed to the irritating chemicals left behind. This can be especially troublesome if you have sensitive skin.

Now, when it comes to organic products being used as a ploy to make more money, all you have to do is read the ingredients label on a product. If it contains only one or two natural extracts in trace amounts, mixed in with the usual line up petrolatum, mineral oil, isopropyl myristate, trietholamine, glycerin, propylene glycol, alcohols and fragrances, you will immediately know this has nothing to do with true organic skin care.

However, if the label lists HIGH CONCENTRATIONS of natural extracts, like the ones listed above, you will know you have a product which will nourish and support your body’s ability to keep your skin looking healthy, young and beautiful.

Make no mistake about it. Science has proven we need organic skincare to maintain the health and appearance of our skin. With clean skin being the starting point, it only makes sense to use an organic face wash which has been specifically designed to lay the foundation for a young, beautiful complexion.

Antioxidant Skin Care Products That Make You Look Beautiful

Antioxidant skin care products offer you one huge benefit: they bend time in your favor. Yes, they appear to turn back the clock, making you look years younger. The use of skin care products with antioxidants is a simple, yet effective way to reverse the effects of aging skin.

What does younger skin look like? Well, it has no wrinkles and no age spots. In addition, it is smooth, soft, creamy, and even-toned. Using the right antioxidants can give you younger looking skin.

Should You Only Buy Organic?

While it's a good idea to choose an organic antioxidant, I would not get too bewitched by the "organic" label. Here's why: marketers realize that many consumers base their decision exclusively on that label. Yet, it is not quite clear what makes a skin cream organic. Moreover, what if it is organic, but has ineffective ingredients? Instead of basing your buying decision on buzz words like "organic" focus on getting a skin cream that is natural and rich in antioxidants.

Top 10 Ingredients to Avoid

Of course, you should avoid anything with the following ingredients:

1. Mineral Oil

2. Paraffin

3. Petrolatum

4. Parabens

5. Phenol

6. Carbolic Acid

7. Acrylamide

8. Sodium laurel, lauryl sulfate, or sodium laureth sulfate

9. Dioxane

10. Fragrances

These are harmful chemicals manufacturers often put in skin care products because they are cheap. They are not only bad for your skin, but some are carcinogenic. Mineral oil, for example, absorbs water readily so it puffs up the cream, but it is nothing more than crude oil and clogs your pores. If you do research on any of these names, you will be shocked at why manufacturers are even allowed to put them into products.

Choose Products Backed By Scientific Testing

What will serve you best are antioxidant skin care products that have been clinically tested to improve human skin. In other words, an extract based on a fruit is many times more potent than just the fruit itself.

What Are the Benefits of Antioxidants?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. The best way to take care of it is to limit the damaging effects of free radicals. The result will be healthy, younger skin.

Antioxidants reduce the signs of aging by soothing infection, toning the skin, and making it smooth to the touch.

In all, there are five benefits to using antioxidants topically:

1. Sun damage dries the skin and makes it appear tough. It also causes it to wrinkle. When you use an antioxidant, you start blood-flow in the skin. This, in turn, stimulates the formation of new skin. Incidentally, you should also use cleansers and moisturizers to restore your skin after it has been damaged by too much exposure to the sun.

2. Scar tissue is different from healthy tissue. Antioxidants increase blood flow to scars, reducing their tough structure, making it easier to blend around new skin.

3. Antioxidants do not remove wrinkles wrinkles, but they do make them less noticeable. Add vitamin C and E in your wrinkle reduction program.

4. Antioxidants firm skin, and they are commonly used in eye creams.

5. Through increasing blood flow, antioxidants soothe irritation and remove inflammation. They also reduce the incidence to acne.

Top 7 Antioxidant Ingredients

Here is a short list of antioxidants you should look for on the label of a skin care product.

1. Alpha lipoic acid.

2. Pine bark.

3. Green tea.

4. CoQ10.

5. Aloe.

6. Allium (an extract of onion).

7. Phytessence Wakame (a Japanese sea kelp).

In your quest for younger, more beautiful skin, you should make sure you use antioxidant skin care products.
